As a college student, a job is likely at the forefront of your mind. Maybe you’re a senior feeling the pressure to determine work plans post-graduation. Maybe you’re hoping to secure an internship this summer. Or maybe you’re just interested in exploring what jobs are out there. Whatever your situation, a career fair is a great option to connect you with employers who are currently hiring.

On Tuesday, February 25, Geneva College is hosting a career fair with over 90 employers and graduate schools attending who will be excited to speak with you about potential job opportunities. If you’ve ever experienced frustration attempting to find job openings online, you’re not alone. However, a career fair offers you the chance to engage in conversations with employers, giving them an in-person, more authentic perspective on your interests and abilities. And, since up to 80% of jobs are not posted online, you may discover a job opening that fits your unique skills.

So, how can you make the most of your time at the career fair?

Bring your resume. Bring 10-12 printed copies of your resume and leave a copy with any employers you speak with. Even if they don’t have a current job opening for you, your resume can help build a relationship over time, reminding them who you are if jobs become available in the future. A nice folder is a helpful, professional way to organize your resumes and any informational material that is given to you.

Dress appropriately. Professional clothing (think interview clothing) is recommended. An employer probably won’t make a note that you dressed well, but they will definitely notice if you don't dress up at all. Wearing the right clothing demonstrates that you are taking your job search seriously. If you don’t own professional clothing, ask around — your roommate or neighbor down the hall might have something you could borrow!

Make a plan. Look at the list of employers beforehand and determine who you want to talk to. Take a deep breath and confidently approach their table. Remember — they know why you’re there and will likely welcome you into a conversation. Always thank employers for their time.

Keep an open mind. Often a career fair will introduce you to job and internship opportunities you didn’t even know were out there. Be willing to speak with recruiters on the spot, and don’t be afraid to ask questions!

Have reasonable expectations. While some students may leave a career fair with interview requests or job offers, others will merely experience conversations with employers. However, take heart — attending a career fair is often the first step in building a long-term relationship with an employer. A couple years down the road, that initial conversation may result in you getting hired. In-person conversations with recruiters are always beneficial, since it gives them the chance to meet you as a person and not just as an online resume and list of qualifications.

While the job search may seem stressful, a career fair is a great opportunity for you to get connected with employers and expand your knowledge of the work world. If you have other questions, the Center for Calling & Career is available to assist with resume-writing, interview practice, and your job search.
